Workshops

The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) sponsors a variety of experiential and educational workshops designed to share information about the health benefits of music or to help music therapists further their education and training.

For Professionals

Led by the specialists at the IMNF or by guest speakers, the professional workshops qualify to meet continuing education requirements for certified music therapists and other health-care professionals. The workshops concentrate on new advances in music therapy as well as training for specific services that have been demonstrated to be effective for certain disorders.

Summer Institute 2015

The IMNF gratefully acknowledges a generous grant from the Each One Counts Foundation that makes this year’s free summer institute possible. IMNF’s two-day workshop aims to enhance understanding of the science and psychology of pain perception.  By including the neuroscience research that shows how and why music can alter pain perception, workshop participants will gain insights to increase their effectiveness in utilizing music in pain management.

For the Community

The IMNF invites the community to learn more about the health benefits of music therapy through sample sessions of group music therapy for wellness. Scheduled throughout the year, these workshops are developed to provide community members with the opportunity to experience general wellness benefits from music therapy.

The IMNF Music Therapy Clinic for Aphasia

If you’ve been diagnosed with Aphasia, but can tap your fingers to You Are My Sunshine, this may be for you!

The IMNF clinics seek to enhance speech and communication skills through music therapy techniques. We will achieve these goals by engaging clinic participants in repetitive music-based singing and vocal activities such as singing songs from memory and practicing word retrieval with fill-in-the-blank phrases, both sung and spoken.  Our regular clinics, at the IMNF’s Bronx home at 612 Allerton Avenue, run over the course of six weeks, two sessions per week.  Improvements IMNF’s clinic participants have reported include: breath strength, articulation, the rate at which they name target words, and their response and initiation time.

For information about clinic fees and future start dates, please call 718-519-5840 or email imnf@centerlight.org.
